Issue #5: May - July 2005

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Here are some of the things we have been involved in to promote the services of NCYLC and maintain networks with the community, government and private sector

NSW Activities

Youth Justice Coalition Meetings:
The Centre sent a representative to two meetings of the Youth Justice Coalition between May and July where topical issues affecting children were discussed. Some examples included, supporting the Australian Privacy Foundationˇ¦s submission to the NSW Government voicing concern about a proposal to allocate every school student in Australia with a student identification number, conducting a fines law reform project, preparing a submission regarding certain Ombudsman discussion papers and attempts at being involved in a Cityrail Transit Officers Inquiry so as to make the inquiry more transparent to the public.

NSW CLC Conference:
Representatives of the Centre attended several interesting and informative seminars provided at the NSW Community Legal Centres State Conference from 20-21 June 2005. Seminars included:
. Making Police Complaints Effective;
. Working with Aboriginal Communities;
. Federal Anti-Terrorism Laws;
. Disability Issues; and
. Legal Referral.

Queensland Activities

The Centre has been working closely with Queensland youth justice agencies to highlight the failure of the State Government to include 17 year olds in the youth justice system - the last remaining state not to, after changes to the Victorian system came into effect on 1 July 2005. This has included media releases and interviews. The strategy appears to be working as network representatives have been invited to meet with an adviser from the Premier's Office.
