This article first appeared in Article 13 (Law and Policy Journal of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre), issn 1447 - 2651, September 2002.IntroductionThe Convention on the Rights of the Child (CROC) was an important landmark for the world's children. It established that children are entitled, not only to the same human rights as everyone else, but further that they are entitled to special rights which take account of their youthfulness and vulnerability. CROC has now been ratified by more than 190 countries worldwide and has thus received greater support than any other Human Rights Instrument in the history of the United Nations. This Information Sheet aims to provide basic information about CROC, how it was developed and what mechanisms there are for ensuring that children benefit from it. We hope that the Information Sheet may correct some of the misunderstandings that have made CROC a subject of some controversy. |
